Mountaineer adds West Virginia Derby bonuses

The West Virginia Racing Commission approved bonuses to be attached to this year’s $750,000 West Virginia Derby (G2) on August 4 at Mountaineer Park.

“Any Grade 1/Group 1 winning horse that also wins the West Virginia Derby will receive a $150,000 bonus,” said Rose Mary Williams, Mountaineer’s director of racing. “And any West Virginia Derby starter that won a leg of the Triple Crown will receive a bonus of $25,000 per race for both the trainer and owner.”

There is no nomination fee for the West Virginia Derby. Nominations will close on Monday, July 23. Starters (numbering 12, with four also eligibles) will be named through the entry box on Tuesday, July 31. The race offers a guaranteed winner’s share of $435,750. Including bonuses, a horse’s connections could potentially earn $735,750.
