I’ll Have Another, the son of and Clarke’s mare Arch’s Gal Edith, grabbed the lead from Bodemeister in the stretch and held on to win the Derby Saturday.

“It’s just a great feeling,” Clarke, a New Jersey resident, said in a telephone interview Saturday night. “I just said to someone, ‘There are only 137 other people who have ever done this.’ That’s not too bad.”

Clarke said he watched the race from a friend’s home in Upper Saddle River, N.J., screaming at the television as the race unfolded.

Clarke, who boards Arch’s Gal Edith at Brookdale Farm in Versailles, Ky., said much of the credit belongs to Brookdale’s Freddy Seitz. That’s who suggested breeding the mare with Flower Alley, who stands stud at Three Chimneys Farm in Midway.

Arch’s Gal Edith was a modest racehorse, earning $25,800 in one career start. She has foaled three horses, all of which have won on the racetrack.

I’ll Have Another, purchased for $35,000 last year by owner J. Paul Reddam at an Ocala sale, is the first stakes-winning horse bred by Clarke.
